A Primer on Facility Siting and Building Risk

Overview

This one day workshop will cover the regulatory requirements for facility siting and provide an overview of the methods to satisfy the requirements. We will specifically review the American Petroleum Institute (API) recommended practice (RP) 752 (Management of Hazards Associated with Location of Process Plant Permanent Buildings) and 753 (Management of Hazards Associated with Location of Process Plant Portable Buildings). These documents provide guidance for managing the risk from explosions, fires, and flammable/toxic material releases to on-site personnel located in permanent or portable buildings.

Topics

  • A better understanding of overall requirements
  • Look specifically into API RP 752, 753, 756
  • Review the methods needed to satisfy these requirements
  • How to apply techniques for calculating the effects from fires
  • How to apply techniques for calculating the effects from flammable and toxic dispersions
  • How to apply techniques for calculating the effects of explosions, e.g., vapor cloud explosions, pressure vessel bursts
  • Better understand how blast loads are applied to buildings
  • Tools and methods used to evaluate potential building damage from explosions, including screening tools such as Exceedance Curves development based on worldwide recognized overpressure thresholds, and also more detailed techniques such as Single Degree Of Freedom (SDOF) approach and Pressure-Impulse (P-I) Diagrams development
  • Tools for effective decision-making based on Facility Siting results

Learn what you need to do to satisfy the facility siting requirements of the process hazard analysis element of the OSHA PSM standard 1910.119
