Vapor breakthrough is the uncontrolled flow of vapor from high pressure to low-pressure equipment after a loss in upstream liquid level, resulting in overpressure of the low-pressure equipment. Vapor breakthrough scenarios are often the sizing case for relief system and flare design, so should be carefully considered. The vapor breakthrough scenario can be mishandled in emergency relief system design; sizing credits may be applied incorrectly, important factors may be missed, or the scenario may be forgotten in a hazard analysis entirely. This work reviews different modelling methods for sizing vapor breakthrough scenarios, including steady state modelling, implementing further complexities to reduce the relief requirement, dynamic modelling, and inclusion of DIERS coupling equations for predicting vapor/liquid disengagement characteristics in the low-pressure system. This aims to provide a comprehensive overview into modelling vapor breakthrough, describing how to reduce relief requirements with more rigorous methods.
Commandant Virginie Guyot is a fighter pilot of the Armée de l'Air who achieved an historical first when she was appointed leader of the Patrouille de France, becoming the first woman in the world to command a precision aerobatic demonstration team. She will give a keynote presentation on What It Takes To Accomplish When It Gets Hazardous.
