Many chemical companies, toll manufacturers, and certified contract, development, and manufacturing organizations (CDMO) often use the same process equipment for the production of different chemistries or recipes.
These companies face a significant challenge to properly and safely adapt the processing of the many different chemicals that they manufacture to their equipment. Typical multipurpose process equipments include chemical reactors, blenders, storage vessels, dryers, mixers, etc.
A thorough understanding is needed of (a) the hazard potential of the different chemicals and chemistries, (b) the chemical reaction rates for both desired and undesired reactions, and (c) the suitability of the process equipment to handle the scale-up with different process conditions and chemicals.
Read this newsletter by Georges A. Melhem, Ph.D., FAIChE, for a look at the scenarios that can lead to runaway reactions in multipurpose equipment. Included are the key components of an optimal Technology Transfer Package (TTP). Topics include:
Although many organizations can be vulnerable to such catastrophic events, they have not taken sufficient and proper steps to identify and truly understand chemical reactivity hazards. Take a moment to better understand your organization’s potential vulnerabilities that are related to chemical reactivity hazards.
Bonus! This newsletter also includes access to a 40-minute presentation by Georges A. Melhem, Ph.D., FAIChE, on what makes a facility vulnerable to chemical reactivity and solutions for mitigating the risks if your facility is running multiple recipes with the same process equipment.
Have a great and safe day.
